5 Suggestions On How To End A Conclusion Paragraph For A Research Paper

When you get to the end of your paper, you start to feel instant relief. When this paper is a research paper and you have put forth a lot of effort to get to this point, it can be almost complete euphoria when you get to this stage of the process. Most students throw the conclusion together by just restating the thesis and making a few other remarks.

You have worked so hard and built a beautiful research paper that is full of great evidence to support your well-thought out ideas and then you slop on a regurgitation of the thesis and come crashing to the ground. Don’t make this mistake!

Here are five suggestions on how to end your paper:

  • Give an amazing fact you found while researching
  • You know that really cool fact that you read and you have been dying to include it somewhere but you just can’t find where to include it. NOW! Leave it with your audience to ponder over. Put that interesting fact into the paper if it relates to your piece and adds a little something for your audience to think about.

  • Restate your main points
  • This is your last shot to get your point across to your audience. It is where you express your opinion one last time to get it stuck in your reader’s head. Break that one sentence thesis statement into a few well directed sentences.

  • Ask a question
  • You can leave your audience thinking. It is a good thing. Let your paper stick in their mind for a while. You can easily create this phenomena by asking them a question relating to the information that you discussed.

  • Keep it simple
  • You don’t want to make it really convoluted and confusing. Simply state the information that you want your reader to take away from your paper. It doesn’t have to be hidden. They don’t need to find the meaning. It should be right there in black and white.

  • Never present new reasons
  • When I said to give them something to think about, I did not mean to add another reason. You should only discuss something relating directly to the things that you have already discussed. You don’t introduce any new topics or concepts in the conclusion. That should only be done in the body of the paper.
